14 Natural Ant Repellent Strategies

Safe, effective ways to keep ants out of your home using natural ingredients.

Ants are a persistent nuisance pest that can be extremely difficult to deal with if an infestation gets out of control. They are prolific breeders, and some ants live for a long time so populations can grow quickly.

One of the best ways to control ant populations is to prevent them altogether. By using several ant repellents together, you can minimize the likelihood that ants will find your home desirable.

Why Natural Repellents Work

Ants have highly sensitive olfactory systems. Strong scents overwhelm their senses and disrupt the pheromone trails they use to navigate. Many natural ingredients also contain compounds that are toxic or irritating to ants.

Essential Oils That Repel Ants

1. Mint / Peppermint Oil

The scent is too aggressive for ants' sensitive olfactory senses. Grow fresh mint around your home or use diluted essential oil mix to spray entryways and perimeter. Creates a barrier ants will avoid.

2. Tea Tree Oil

Ants react to tea tree oil like peppermint. The sharp scent is too aggressive, so they avoid it. Can be combined with peppermint and other scents for a natural ant repellent cocktail.

3. Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

Contains natural insect repellents including eucalyptus and citronella, both effective ant repellents. Apply diluted around entry points.

4. Neem Oil

Natural insect repellent found in many store-bought ant repellents. Also effective against aphids, which produce the honeydew many ants feed on.

Household Items That Repel Ants

5. Vinegar

50/50 water diluted spray kills ants on contact and acts as residual deterrent. Works as all-purpose cleaner ants hate. Overpowers pheromone trails so ants can no longer follow them.

6. Lemon Juice

Smell is similar to citronella. Lemon-scented cleaners can be used as a substitute to help minimize ant presence.

7. Glass Cleaner / Liquid Detergent

Ants use pheromone trails to find food. Strong-scented cleaners erase pheromone traces, preventing ants from finding their way back.

8. Coffee Grounds

Brewed coffee grounds repel ants. Spread around your home's exterior to create a barrier. Also beneficial for soil due to nutrients. Requires large quantity for full coverage.

Spices That Repel Ants

9. Cinnamon

Cinnamon powder causes ants to suffocate when breathed in. Apply to ant hills near openings for optimal impact. Contains trans-cinnamaldehyde which can be fatal to ants. Cinnamon essential oils can also overpower pheromone trails.

10. Cayenne or Black Pepper

Cayenne contains capsaicin; black pepper contains piperine. Both are irritants for ants' sensitive sensory systems. Sprinkle around home exterior to prevent ants.

Powders and Dusts That Repel and Kill Ants

11. Borax / Boric Acid

Effective against cockroaches, ants, and termites. Mix with sugar or syrup to create bait ants will eat and return to colony. Kills the queen and collapses colony.

Warning: Keep away from children and pets.

12. Chalk / Talcum Powder

Safe alternative that deters ants. Fine powder suffocates ants when breathed in and covers pheromone trails. Makes it difficult for ants to traverse marked areas.

13. Diatomaceous Earth

Effective repellent and killer. Acts as a desiccant for hard-to-reach places. Abrasive powder wears down exoskeletons while drawing out moisture, causing ants to dry out and die.

Direct Elimination Methods

14. Boiling Water

Quick way to exterminate an ant colony by drowning. However, colonies can be huge and connected to satellite colonies. Be sure to ensure the queen dies so she does not repopulate over time.

Ant Repellent FAQs

What do ants hate?

Ants hate black pepper and cayenne pepper which is too spicy for their sensitive sensory systems. They are also deterred by mint and tea tree oil.

What repels ants instantly?

Vinegar acts as an effective ant repellent. It kills them on contact but leaves a residual scent that ants avoid. Use a spray bottle to spray a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water to soak an area and then wipe it up for results.

What deters ants in a home?

There are several natural deterrents that can be used against ants. If ants are not quite an infestation, general sanitation combined with cinnamon, peppermint, chili pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, or a spray of tea tree oil, lemon juice, or vinegar can really deter ants.
