Are Bed Bug Heat Treatments Effective?

How whole-house heat treatment achieves 100% bed bug mortality.

Bed bugs are one of the most difficult bugs to treat. They are often immune to pesticides, can survive several months without feeding, hide just about anywhere, and move to avoid treatment.

Heat treatment utilizes whole house heaters to raise the ambient temperature above the bed bug's thermal threshold. This causes bed bugs, nymphs, and eggs to die off once 118°F is reached and maintained for 90 minutes.

Why Are Bed Bug Heat Treatments Effective?

Bed bugs at all life stages have a thermal threshold that, if exceeded, causes death. To achieve complete extermination, industrial heaters maintain internal temperatures of 140-145°F for 6-9 hours, allowing heat to permeate hard-to-reach spaces.

Critical Requirement

All parts of the home must reach 118°F for 90 minutes, including wall cavities, crawl spaces, and attics. If heat does not permeate completely, bed bugs will escape to cooler areas and return after treatment.

Pros and Cons of Bed Bug Heat Treatments

Pros

  • No toxic pesticides (effective against resistant bed bugs)
  • No residual chemicals to clean up
  • 100% success rate when done correctly
  • Usually only needs one treatment
  • Reaches hidden and dormant bed bugs

Cons

  • Does not prevent reintroduction after treatment
  • Requires significant preparation
  • Home must be vacant during treatment
  • Heat-sensitive items must be removed
  • Usually more expensive than other options

Different Heat Treatment Options

Treating Infested Items

Wash clothes on hottest settings, cycle through wash and dry twice (90+ minutes). Use steam cleaners or portable heating chambers for non-clothing items like luggage, bedding, and furniture.

Individual Room Treatment

Electric or propane heaters superheat enclosed room to ~135°F for several hours. Items do not need individual treatment. Risk: Bed bugs may escape to other areas, spreading infestation.

Whole House Treatment

Most optimal for intense infestations. Ensures all areas reach thermal threshold so bed bugs cannot escape. Complete eradication when implemented properly.

Bed Bug Heat Treatment FAQs

How long does heat treatment for bed bugs take?

Bed bugs and their eggs need to be raised above 118°F for at least 90 minutes for 100% extermination. Most treatments raise internal temperatures to 135-150°F and maintain for 3-6 hours to ensure heat permeates the entire home.

Do I have to take all clothes out of house for heat treatment?

No, clothing can stay inside but should be prepared. Wash and dry on high heat settings twice. Spread out hanging clothes and loosen tightly packed clothes in drawers to allow heat penetration.

Do bed bugs come back after heat treatment?

If done properly, bed bugs should be completely eradicated. However, heat treatment offers no residual protection, so they can be reintroduced via items that were removed or through future contaminated luggage, clothing, or other items.

What should I remove before bed bug heat treatment?

Most items should stay to ensure complete extermination. Remove items that can melt (candles, CDs, pressurized cans), living plants and animals, and some sentimental items. These removed items must be inspected as bed bugs can hide in almost anything.
