What Does Bed Bug Poop Look Like?

Identifying bed bug droppings is a key sign of infestation.

Bed bugs are bloodsucking pests notorious for being extremely persistent and causing itchy red bites. If you have noticed bites appearing when you wake up, you may be dealing with the start of a bed bug infestation.

Another common sign is seeing bed bug droppings on or around your mattress. Since bed bugs feed on blood, they excrete a byproduct that looks like tiny, dark, ink-like splotches found in mattress seams and wherever bed bugs hide.

Dark Brown
Almost Black
Pinpoint Size
Grows Over Time
Semi-Liquid
Bleeds & Smears

How to Identify Bed Bug Feces

Color

Very dark rusty brown, almost appearing black. Consistent because bed bugs only feed on blood.

Consistency

Semi-liquid, similar to toothpaste. More liquid than solid because it is a byproduct of blood.

Size & Shape

Starts as small pinpoint, grows outward as it bleeds into fabric. Like a ballpoint pen bleeding ink.

Will Bed Bug Feces Smear?

Yes. A good way to test suspicious stains is using a damp Q-tip. If the stain smears into a reddish-brown streak when wiped, and the Q-tip turns dark brown, there is a good chance you are looking at bed bug feces.

Where to Find Bed Bug Poop

Bed bug poop is found wherever clusters of bed bugs hide. Since they prefer to stay within short distance of their host, most infestations start on the mattress.

Mattress seams
Under mattress label
Box spring seams
Bed frame joints
Carpet edges
Baseboards
Nightstands
Electrical outlets

What About Sheets and Bedding?

Finding bed bug poop on sheets is rare because bed bugs retreat to hiding spots after feeding. Stains on sheets are more likely from bed bug bites that shed blood or smashed engorged bed bugs. This is still an indicator of infestation.

Why You Should Clean Up Bed Bug Droppings

Pheromone Attraction

Bed bug feces contain aggregation pheromones that draw bed bugs back to hiding spots. Newly hatched nymphs use these pheromones to find safe harborage points.

Health Problems

Bed bug waste contains histamines that trigger allergic responses. Infested homes have 20x more histamines than non-infested homes, even after treatment.

Key point: Even after bed bugs are exterminated, the feces continue to cause allergy problems unless thoroughly cleaned.

How to Clean Up Bed Bug Feces

1. Enzyme Cleaner

Apply enzyme-based cleaning solution designed for difficult stains. Let sit to help lift the stain from material.

2. Hydrogen Peroxide

Treat remaining discoloration with cold water and hydrogen peroxide mix. Leave on for only 10 minutes to avoid material damage.

3. Vacuum

For dried droppings on non-absorbent surfaces, vacuum to collect. They are too small to pick up individually.

4. Steam Treatment

After cleaning, steam the mattress and box spring at high temperatures to kill any remaining bed bugs.

Can Bed Bug Droppings Be Picked Up?

No. The semi-liquid consistency means it will smear if you try to pick it up. Given time, it bleeds into porous materials causing permanent stains. On non-absorbent surfaces, it may dry but is still too small to pick up individually.

What to Do After Cleaning

Encase Mattress & Box Spring

Use bed bug proof encasements to trap any remaining bed bugs.

Install Monitors

Place bed bug interceptors under bed frame legs to catch crawling bed bugs.

Regular Inspection

Check monitors regularly. If bed bugs appear, professional treatment is needed.

Does Bed Bug Poop Smell?

Bed bug poop does not smell rancid like animal waste because it is primarily digested blood. Instead, it has a slightly sweet, musty to rusty smell from pheromones and iron oxidation. The sweet, musty smell comes from aggregation pheromones that mark safe hiding places.

Bed Bug Dropping FAQs

What does the poop from a bed bug look like?

Bed bug poop looks like little reddish-brown ink stains. Since it is semi-liquid, it bleeds into fabrics and materials like untreated wood. Finding these stains is an indicator of bed bugs that should be treated and cleaned.

Can you see bed bug poop?

Yes, bed bug poop is visible to the naked eye if you know where to look. They are rarely out in the open because bed bugs tend to poop where they hide, such as in mattress seams and box spring joints.

Is bed bug poop hard or soft?

Bed bug poop has a semi-liquid consistency that tends to bleed into absorbent materials or smear. On mattress fabric, it often looks like a ballpoint pen has bled out on the surface.

What are the black dots left by bed bugs?

The black dots left by bed bugs are usually small poop stains. How many dots exist and how far they have bled out is usually a good indicator of how long the infestation has existed.
