With all the different treatment options available for termite infestations, it is important to know which are effective and how long that effectiveness lasts. It can be problematic if an expensive treatment only works for a short period since termites can reinfest quickly.

Termites cause over $5 billion in structural damages across the United States annually. Home and business owners want to spend money on the most effective and long-lasting treatments to minimize damage potential.

How Long Do Termite Treatments Last?

Generally, termite treatments last 1-5 years, with the longest lasting 7-10 years. This makes quarterly treatments less critical than for other pests. Duration depends on treatment type:

Termite Baits

~1 Year

Cellulose treated with termiticide acts as slow poison. Termites bring it back to colony, eventually causing collapse. Annual inspection recommended to replace/refill baits.

Liquid Treatment

~5 Years

Saturates soil around building with termiticides. Subterranean termites contact treated soil, become infected and die. Effective as long as soil barrier is not disrupted.

Borate Products

10-21 Days / 2-5 Years

Gels, granules, sprays last 10-21 days. Wood treatment lasts 2-5 years depending on exposure. Borax is water soluble. Use sealant to extend effectiveness.

Fumigation

4-10 Years

Most effective but most expensive. Requires tenting and sealing for several days. Fumigants penetrate everywhere, leaving residue deep inside walls and wood.

Heat Treatment

No Residual

Requires tenting like fumigation. Raises temperatures above termites' heat threshold. No long-lasting protection. Termites can return if not completely exterminated.

Advantages of Termidor

Newer termiticides like Termidor are emerging as top-of-the-line defenses. Studies show effectiveness lasting up to 15 years. It offers both soil saturation and wood treatment.

Extreme Effectiveness

Lasts up to 15 years. Recommended reapplication every 10 years to be safe.

Low Retreat Rate

Only 2% of previously treated areas need retreating.

Invisible & Odorless

No baiting stations, tenting, or heavy fumigants required.

Cost Effective

Runs cheaper than other treatments due to easy implementation.

Easy Implementation

No heavy preparation, maintenance, or monitoring necessary.

Factors Affecting Treatment Duration

Treatment effectiveness is usually an estimate given several variables that impact duration:

Species of Termites

Subterranean termites can be effectively prevented using soil drench methods. Drywood termites can be reintroduced by contaminated furniture, poorly maintained tree branches, stacked wood piles, etc.

Severity of Infestation

No treatment guarantees complete eradication. If a massive colony is hidden inside or below your home, there is always a chance the infestation will return.

Extend Your Treatment Effectiveness

Treatments alone are not all it takes. Homeowners can help minimize reinfestation potential by monitoring and reducing conditions that help termites:

Remove Water Sources

Termites need moisture to survive. Eliminate leaks, standing water, and damp areas.

Remove Food Sources

Keep firewood, tree branches, and lumber away from building. Remove dead stumps and rotting wood.

Ongoing Monitoring

Check connection points to fences, patios, decks, sheds. Monitor for emerging signs of activity.

Important: If signs of reinfestation are identified, immediate retreatment is necessary. This could happen shortly after initial treatment or several years later. Always be vigilant to prevent further wood damage.
