Do Termites Bite People?

Understanding the real risks termites pose to you and your home.

Termites might be notorious for causing significant damage to homes, but they are not typically a direct threat to humans. It is extremely rare for a termite to bite a human as they spend most of their lives concealed within the wood they consume.

If a termite bite does occur, it would most likely be from the soldier caste within a colony, as they are the designated protectors. Their primary purpose is to fend off invaders like ants or rival termite groups.

The Short Answer

Termite bites are exceptionally uncommon. If someone does experience one, it is generally mild and can be managed at home without medical intervention. Termites do not transmit diseases.

What Are Termites?

2,600+
Species globally
3 Main Types
In the US
49 States
All except Alaska
Cellulose
Primary diet (wood)

The 3 most common types in the US are subterranean, dampwood, and drywood termites. They vary in color from white to light brown and have six legs, thick waists, and straight antennae.

Can Termites Bite Humans?

Soldier Termites

Have large, bulbous heads and sharp mandibles. Can bite if colony is threatened, but primarily designed to fight ants and other termites.

Winged Termites

Focus is on reproduction and colony expansion, not defense. Bites from flying termites are almost unheard of.

When bites occur: Typically only when a human inadvertently disturbs the inner chambers of a colony during repairs or demolition. As long as termites are left undisturbed, the risk is minimal.

What Would a Termite Bite Look Like?

A termite bite most likely would not pierce the skin. It might result in a small red bump. In rare cases, there may be an allergic reaction with swelling and itchiness. Symptoms typically subside within 1-3 days.

More Likely Culprits

If you have a bite with more severe reactions (redness, swelling, pain), it is highly unlikely from a termite. Common biting insects include:

Ants
Mites
Bed bugs
Fleas
Mosquitoes
Lice
Spiders

What Should You Do If You Get Bit by a Termite?

1Clean the Area

Wash with soap and water to prevent infection.

2Apply Cold Compress

Alleviate any discomfort or pain.

3Monitor the Site

Watch for swelling or adverse reactions.

4Use Anti-Itch Cream

If itching occurs, soothe the skin.

What Are the Main Risks of Termites?

Structural Damage is the Real Threat

Termites pose minimal direct health risks but present a significant threat to homes and buildings. They silently consume wood and weaken structural integrity. Damage can affect foundations, walls, floors, and even carpets.

What Attracts Termites?

Wood in Contact with Soil

Gives subterranean termites access via mud tubes.

Untreated Wood

Prefer wood without chemical treatments or sealants.

Excessive Moisture

Water causes rot, making wood easier to consume.

Access Points

Cracks, gaps, and open windows allow swarming termites in.

Exterior Wood Sources

Trees, fences, wood piles near the home.

How to Prevent Termites

Seal or Treat Wood

During construction to deter termites from eating.

Create Water Drainage

Prevent accumulation near home. Moisture attracts termites.

Concrete Foundation Barrier

Maintain gap between wood and soil.

Store Firewood Away

Do not stack near your home.

Seal Cracks and Gaps

Prevent swarms from easy access.

Treat Outdoor Wood

Fences and structures with sealant or pesticide.

Regular Inspections

Professional pest control for early detection.

Proper Land Grading

Direct water away from home.
