Termite Eggs

What termite eggs look like, where to find them, and what finding eggs means for your home.

1,000/Day
Eggs per queen
26-30 Days

25 Years
Queen lifespan
9 Million
Lifetime eggs

A termite's life cycle starts when the queen lays a batch of eggs. These eggs are tiny translucent to white orbs contained deep within the termite nest. It is rare for people to ever come into contact with drywood termite eggs unless an inspector discovers the core chambers.

Subterranean termite eggs are usually found buried underground in the heart of the nest, which can be up to 18 inches below ground level.

What Do Termite Eggs Look Like?

Termite eggs are rarely seen because they are well protected deep within the colony. Under magnification, they are usually translucent white or tan. Size and color change when closer to hatching.

Appearance

Tiny brown or white orbs similar to caviar or jellybeans. Translucent but details hard to see at small size.

Egg Clusters

Grouped together in cells. When clustered, they look like white powdery mildew growing inside the nest.

Care

Cells are designed for workers and queen to take care of eggs. They require constant care to survive.

Is Finding Termite Eggs Bad?

Yes, finding termite eggs indicates a severe infestation. The wood around the egg chamber would have to be so structurally compromised that the outer wooden frame collapses during inspection, exposing the eggs.

Where Eggs Are Found

Deep underground or within wooden structures. Only discovered during thorough inspection when wood crumbles under pressure.

Recommended Treatment

Fumigation is typically the most effective treatment. Discuss options with an experienced termite control technician.

How Many Eggs Does a Queen Lay?

1,000
Eggs per day
25
Years lifespan
9 Million
Lifetime eggs

There is generally one queen per colony until size requires additional support. Once at maximum capacity, 1-2 more queens may emerge for satellite colonies. In warmer conditions, egg production continues year-round. It pauses during colder winter temperatures.

How Long Do Termite Eggs Take to Hatch?

The full-term gestation period lasts 26 days to a month. Environmental conditions affect timing significantly.

Warmer Climates

Warmer temperatures expedite gestation. Colonies in year-round warm climates produce eggs all year AND eggs hatch quicker.

Population Explosion

Termite populations can explode much faster in tropical to temperate climates. This is extremely problematic.

Drywood vs Subterranean Termite Eggs

Drywood Termite Eggs

  • Most likely to be discovered during inspection
  • Located within wooden structures
  • Slower colony expansion

Subterranean Termite Eggs

  • Exist underground (up to 18 inches deep)
  • Much more difficult to find
  • Prolific breeders with faster colony expansion

How to Kill Termite Eggs

Termite eggs are difficult to treat due to their location. They normally fail to hatch once the colony collapses from other treatments like fumigation or local spot treatment.

Why Colony Treatment Works

Eggs need constant care. When workers die from termiticides, eggs eventually stop hatching. Nymphs also perish without care.

Direct Treatment

If eggs are exposed, diatomaceous earth or boric acid applied directly should help kill the eggs.

Ongoing Maintenance

After treatment, ongoing maintenance identifies early signs of termite activity if they ever return.

Note: Unhatched termites do not eat or breathe, so poison baits and fumigants do not affect them directly. The eggs perish because the colony collapses around them.

Schedule a Termite Inspection Today

If you have found termite eggs or signs of termite activity, get your home inspected as soon as possible. EcoGuard Pest Management provides licensed, trained termite specialists for thorough inspections and effective treatments for both drywood and subterranean termites.

Termite Egg FAQs

Can you see termite eggs?

You can see termite eggs with the naked eye, but it may be difficult to make out details without magnification. Without being close up, they look like white powder or fuzz within the nest. However, eggs are extremely hard to locate since they are deep inside the nest.

What do termites look like in their eggs?

Termite eggs under magnification are tiny brown or white orbs similar to caviar or jellybeans. Even though translucent, details are hard to see given how small each egg is. Termites do not take full form until they hatch and mature.

How do you get rid of termite eggs?

Termite eggs do not get removed after treatment. The colony collapses around the egg clusters which then fail to hatch without proper care. By treating the colony as a whole, the eggs no longer present a problem.

What do termite eggs hatch into?

Termite eggs hatch into nymphs that go through several life cycles before becoming mature adult termites. They develop into workers, soldiers, or reproductives depending on colony needs, determined early in the termite's life cycle.
