Even though most spiders are harmless and beneficial predators that feed on other insects, they are never a welcome sight. Most homeowners would rather get rid of spiders regardless of the benefits they provide.

Spiders are perceived as scary and threatening and reproduce quickly, causing populations to grow rapidly. To eliminate them, identify signs of activity, clean up webs, and treat areas to prevent return.

How to Identify Spider Activity

Cobwebs

The strongest sign of active spiders. Found in undisturbed areas like garages, basements, sheds, and outside corners where they catch insects.

Egg Sacs

Small silk sacs indicate reproduction. Found near webs or hidden in safe spots. Each sac can contain hundreds of eggs.

How to Get Rid of Spiders Indoors

Spiders proliferate due to other insects to feed on. Getting rid of spiders usually requires general pest treatment to ensure populations do not return.

Sticky Traps

Place in areas with spider activity. Also catches other bugs which attract more spiders.

Cobweb Cleanup

Use vacuum or duster to destroy and remove webs. Check corners and undisturbed areas.

Eliminate Clutter

Remove hiding places. Exposes hidden webs and allows proper cleanup.

Check Storage

Go through storage spaces and containers regularly to identify problem areas.

General Cleaning

Clean under furniture, inside cupboards/drawers, and under sinks regularly.

Residual Pesticides

Apply spray after cleanup to kill remaining spiders and prevent new ones.

How to Get Rid of Spiders Outside

Eliminating outdoor spiders reduces indoor populations since spiders will find their way in if there is food, water, and shelter. Remember: spiders are important to ecosystems, so only eliminate when they pose a problem.

Natural Deterrents

Plant eucalyptus and mint around your home. Note: mint is invasive, plant only in pots.

Change Outdoor Lighting

Use yellow lightbulbs. Other insects will not be attracted, reducing spider food.

Clean Up Landscaping

Clear debris, trim bushes/trees, cut tall grass. Keep plants away from home to block spider bridges.

Perimeter Spray

Apply residual pesticide barrier to prevent spiders crossing threshold into home.

How to Prevent Spiders

The best way to eliminate spiders is to prevent them altogether. Implement preventative measures to manage the problem before it starts:

Spider Exclusion

Fix torn screens, seal gaps and cracks, install door sweeps to eliminate gaps.

Dust & Vacuum

Regularly disturb areas often left unchecked to disrupt potential spider activity.

Strong Smell Deterrents

Spray peppermint oil, cinnamon, or vinegar where activity has been found.

Reduce Pest Attractants

Remove excess food and water that draw in other bugs spiders feed on.

Preventative Pesticides

Apply residual spray even without problems to prevent spiders from becoming an issue.

What Attracts Spiders

Spiders require shelter, food, water, and mates. If any are readily available, spiders will find them. Eliminate these attractants:

Food Sources

General pest control reduces cockroaches, flies, earwigs, crickets that spiders eat. Spiders get fluids from prey too.

Habitat

Spiders create webs in undisturbed areas. Regular cleaning of garages, basements, attics keeps populations controlled.

Mates

More spiders means more will come looking for mates. Keeping populations low reduces mate-seeking activity.

Which Spiders Should You Get Rid Of?

Most spiders help maintain pest populations. However, two species pose health threats with venomous bites that cause severe pain and tissue damage. Call professionals for large populations of these spiders.

Black Widows

  • Shiny black exoskeleton
  • Red hourglass symbol on large body
  • Common all over the US
  • Webs have extremely strong tensile strength
  • Chaotic web pattern (not net-like)

Brown Recluses

  • Smaller bodies
  • Brown coloring
  • Black violin-shaped marking on back
  • Common in southern and midwestern states
  • Usually found outside
