Black widow spiders (Latrodectus variolus) may sound threatening, but are they actually dangerous? The answer is yes and no. They are shy, cautious, and not aggressive. They rarely bite humans unless they feel threatened or disturbed.

Black widows generally stay in dark, hidden areas free from human activity. When bites do happen, the venom can cause intense pain, discomfort, and even death. However, only females can deliver venomous bites since males and juveniles lack the facial structures necessary.

High Risk Groups: Young children and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to severe and even fatal outcomes from black widow bites.

Are Black Widows Poisonous?

Black widow venom is fifteen times more potent than rattlesnake poison, but it rarely kills people because it is injected in much smaller quantities.

Venom Composition

Mix of biologically active proteins, proteases, and peptides. Main toxin is alpha-Latrotoxin.

Effects

Causes inflammation, swelling, pain, vomiting, sweating, and muscle rigidity.

Severity Varies

Some people have minor to no problems. Others experience extreme pain. Depends on how much venom was injected.

Why Do Black Widows Bite?

Black widows are not aggressive or territorial. They only bite as a defense measure when feeling trapped or disturbed. Common scenarios include:

Garages & Basements

Build webs in rarely disturbed places. Human activity scares them into biting hands that come too close.

Hidden in Shoes

Black widows may hide in shoes left in garages or outdoors.

Trapped in Bedding

Can get trapped in bedding and bite when feeling threatened.

Black Widow Bite Symptoms

Venom contains a toxin that attacks your nervous system. Symptoms usually present within the first couple hours. The bite site has two tiny side-by-side fang marks.

Intense pain, swelling, burning, redness
Tremors or general weakness
Heavy sweating
Shallow or difficulty breathing
Painful and stiff muscles
Nausea or vomiting
Red and itchy rash
Swollen eyelids
Body and stomach pain
Cramping (abdomen, shoulders, back)
Chest pain and tightness
Headache
High blood pressure

Black Widow Bite Risk Factors

Most people will be OK after a black widow bite, but certain groups face higher risks:

Young Children

Small bodies not ready for trauma. More active, spreading venom quickly. Venom may be lethal in smaller bodies.

Elderly

Bodies may not handle trauma. Pain and stress may cause heart attack or other fatal complications.

Pregnant Women

Black widow bites can cause contractions and early labor to start.

Black Widow Bite Prognosis

Most people bitten by a black widow survive, even those who suffer extended periods of excruciating pain. Symptoms generally fade in 24 to 48 hours without treatment. If pain is severe, antivenom can neutralize the venom. With treatment, most symptoms disappear, though long-term muscle spasms may occur in rare cases.

Black Widow Bite FAQs

What happens if you get bitten by a black widow?

The bite area swells up into a red, itchy welt. After venom starts to work, symptoms turn into pain and muscle tightness. As time passes, pain spreads and cramping, headaches, nausea, and spasms may present.

How serious is a black widow bite?

When bites deliver a lot of venom, individuals can suffer intense symptoms and even die. This usually is not a problem for healthy adults, but young kids, the elderly, or those with health problems face fatal risks.

Can you survive a black widow bite without treatment?

Black widows do not always inject their venom. If no symptoms present after a bite, medical treatment is not necessary. Most people survive even serious bites, with symptoms fading in 24-48 hours.
