How Long Do Wasps Live?

A wasp's lifespan depends on the species and their role. Adult worker wasps live between 12-22 days while the queen survives for the entire year until cold causes the colony to die off.

Accounting for egg development to adult takes 40-60 days depending on environmental factors. In tropical or warm locations, wasps can be a year-round pest. In cold climates, wasps die off as food becomes scarce.

Average Wasp Lifespan

The average adult wasp lifespan rarely exceeds 22 days, but depends on role, resources, species, predators, and temperature. Workers account for 99% of adult wasps in a colony.

Wasp Life Cycle Stages

Queen (Starts Colony)

Fertilized female hibernates in winter, emerges in spring to build nest. Lays eggs that hatch in 5-8 days. Eventually lays 200-300 eggs/day.

Larvae (~15 Days)

Eggs hatch into larvae, fed protein-rich insects by workers. After about 15 days, larvae seal their chamber with silk lining to pupate.

Pupa (8-18 Days)

Develops adult features. Exoskeleton hardens and darkens. Wings flatten for flight capability. Emerges from silk seal when ready.

Adult Worker

Infertile female emerges. First nurtures larvae, then collects water, food, and wood pulp. Has symbiotic relationship with larvae for digestion.

Life Cycle of a Wasp Nest

In climates with cold periods, a wasp nest typically lasts one year. Seasonal changes reduce food availability and make survival difficult.

Spring

Fertilized females awaken from dormancy. Find nesting site (dark, dry, undisturbed). Queen works alone until first brood matures. Paper wasps build aerial nests; yellow jackets dig underground.

Summer

Nest grows exponentially. Healthy nests contain 30-15,000 wasps depending on species. Workers expand nest and feed larvae. Large nests can have 20 layers of comb.

Fall

Egg production slows. Wasps forage for themselves. Queen produces fertile males (drones) and females. Mating occurs inside nest. Fertilized females prepare to hibernate.

Winter

In cold climates, most colony dies including queen. Young fertilized females hibernate until spring. In warm climates, activity may slow but continue year-round.

Threats to a Wasp's Lifespan

Natural Predators

Praying mantises, dragonflies, spiders, birds, lizards, rodents. Badgers and bears dig up underground yellow jacket nests.

Temperature Extremes

Susceptible to extreme cold fronts and heat waves. Cannot fly below 50°F. Death at freezing or sustained 105°F+.

Starvation

Fast metabolism requires constant food. Die within 72 hours without feeding. Food scarcity in cold weather is deadly.

Queen Death

If queen dies, colony cannot sustain growth. Without new eggs, adult wasps die from age with no replacements.

Professional Wasp Removal

While wasp nests can decline on their own, having a nest near your home and family is dangerous if left untreated. Wasp Life Cycle FAQs

How long do wasps live indoors?

An individual wasp can typically survive trapped inside for 3-4 days without a stable source of food or water. With adequate resources, it can spend the rest of its life living indoors comfortably.

At what temp do wasps die?

Wasps lose the ability to fly at roughly 50°F, making it impossible to search for food. At freezing temperatures, any wasp left in the elements will die. Sustained temperatures over 105°F for several hours will also cause death from heat.

How long does it take a wasp to die without food?

Most wasps will die from starvation if unable to feed after 72 hours. Their constant movement requires a fast metabolism and lot of high energy food.
