Wasps can be dangerous to humans because they are aggressive and territorial stinging insects. They defend themselves using their stingers. An individual sting causes intense, sharp pain that wears off after 10 minutes.

Wasps release a chemical pheromone that warns other wasps of a threat, causing a swarm to attack. Unlike bees, wasps can sting repeatedly, so a swarmed attack can cause hundreds of stings in a short time.

The Problem With Wasps

Certain species can be extremely aggressive and territorial. They are known to attack with little to no provocation. Different species nest in different locations:

Yellow Jackets

Create underground burrows. Highly aggressive and territorial.

Paper Wasps

Create hanging nests under rooftop eaves. Guard territory aggressively.

Which Types of Wasps Are Dangerous?

Social Wasps (More Dangerous)

  • Paper wasps, yellow jackets
  • Call for reinforcements when threatened
  • Part of larger colony
  • Instinctually protect nest, eggs, larvae
  • Will swarm and repeatedly attack

Solitary Wasps (Less Dangerous)

  • Mud daubers, fig wasps
  • Keep to themselves unless threatened
  • Not part of a larger group
  • No colony to protect
  • Roam individually

Wasp Stings and Why They Attack

Wasp stings are typically painful. Each sting releases venom causing prolonged pain. On the Schmidt pain index (0-4), wasps deliver a 2 or 3. Pain lasts 5-10 minutes, then becomes a dull throbbing.

4 Reasons Wasps Sting

1

Nest Protection

Social wasps are extremely territorial and attack anything too close to their nest.

2

Fall Aggression

Resources decline in fall, making wasps hungrier and more aggressive defending food.

3

Pheromone Release

Stinging or being crushed releases pheromones that call in reinforcements.

4

Feeling Trapped

Wasps in open containers, shoes, or inside homes may attack to free themselves.

Wasp Sting Treatment

Immediate Care

  • Stinger usually does not need removal (smooth, stays attached to wasp)
  • Clean with soap and water
  • Apply cold compress for 10 minutes

Recovery

  • Body processes injury in about 10 minutes
  • Initial swelling and pain decline quickly
  • Injury site may be sore for several days

What to Do When Wasps Attack

Do not wave your hands, swat, remain still, or seek shelter in water. Run and seek shelter where you can prevent wasps from stinging you. A single sting is a nuisance, but multiple stings can be deadly.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Sting site does not improve after several days
Sting in or around eyes or mouth
Welt larger than 5 inches wide
Infection, pus, increasing swelling or pain
Fever, swollen lymph nodes, flu-like symptoms
Difficulty breathing or swallowing
Swollen face, mouth, or throat
Increased heart rate
Dizziness, feeling faint, loss of consciousness

Allergic Reaction Emergency

Each sting delivers venom that can cause reactions from red welts to anaphylactic shock. Multiple stings from a swarm can pose serious health risks even without allergies. Severe reactions require epinephrine. Those severely allergic should carry 2 doses of an EpiPen.

How to Prevent Wasp Stings

Avoid Fragrances

No strong, sugary, or sweet-smelling fragrances and soaps

Avoid Bright Colors

Do not wear bright colors or floral patterns

Stay Away from Fruit

Avoid orchards and fruiting trees

Seal Food & Drinks

Properly seal all food and drinks

Stay Clean

Ensure face and body are not covered in food

If wasps approach: Do not panic. Do not swat or wave them away, as this may cause them to become aggressive.

Wasp Sting FAQs

What to do if a wasp is near you?

Let it go about its business without trying to kill it. Crushing a wasp or swatting at it can cause it to alert other wasps by releasing a chemical pheromone, triggering a swarm to attack.

What happens when you get stung by a wasp?

A wasp sting results in sharp pain that subsides after 10 minutes. In worst cases, an allergic reaction may occur requiring medical attention if medication is not available.

Will a wasp sting me?

A wasp will sting when it feels threatened or if their nest or food is at risk. Even when left alone, wasps may act aggressively because they are extremely territorial near their nests.
