Most mosquito species are nocturnal because midday sun is too hot for survival. Direct sunlight and heat quickly dehydrates these small insects, causing them to rest in cool, dark places until the sun goes down.

Mosquito activity increases in late afternoon. They feed and stay active throughout the night until sunrise.

Are Mosquitoes Nocturnal?

Most species are nocturnal due to inability to survive midday heat. High temperatures cause dehydration and death. However, some species like Aedes Aegypti are diurnal (daytime feeders) and find safe environments with cover from elements.

Most Active

Sunrise, sunset, and throughout the night until temperatures drop too low.

Least Active

Midday when sun is at peak. They rest in shaded areas to avoid heat.

Where Do Mosquitoes Hide During the Day?

Natural Areas

Heavily wooded areas with shrubs, trees, and wood debris. Dark, cold, safe places to retain energy.

Urban Areas

Cool, air-conditioned structures. Anywhere protecting them from sun is a potential harborage point.

Most Active Locations

Woods, wetlands, bodies of water. Anywhere with shelter and water to lay eggs.

Mosquito Season by Region

Season depends on location and temperature, not a specific time of year. Warm, humid places have year-round mosquitoes. Cold-winter areas see populations drop significantly.

Winter & Hibernation

When Does Season End?

When temperatures consistently stay below 50°F for an extended period. A warm snap may bring hibernating mosquitoes back briefly.

Where Do They Go?

Rest in hollow tree stumps, vacant animal burrows, and anywhere that keeps them from freezing.

How Cold to Kill Them?

In temperate/tropical climates, mosquitoes survive winters. If temperatures drop below 32°F for a few days consistently, mosquitoes start dying off.

Why Be Concerned About Mosquito Season?

Globally, mosquitoes are the most dangerous animal on the planet, responsible for millions of deaths yearly. Over 175 species in America carry diseases like West Nile virus, chikungunya, zika, and parasites. Serious management strategies are needed when mosquito season approaches.

How to Prepare for Mosquito Season

Remove standing water (plant basins, pet dishes, bird baths)
Introduce fish/frogs to ponds that eat mosquito larvae
Use growth regulators in water sources
Clear drains, gutters, pipes to prevent puddles
Keep yard trimmed; thin shrubs and bushes for sunlight
Seal tears in window screens; close access points
Use mosquito screens as door barriers
Remove debris: dead branches, tree stumps, leaf piles

Peak Season Control & Repelling

Control Methods

  • CO2-releasing bug zappers (large coverage radius)
  • Outdoor pesticide applications on shrubs, bushes, grass

Repelling Methods

  • Stay inside during sunrise and sunset
  • Apply DEET-containing repellent
  • Wear clothing with residual mosquito repellent

What time are mosquitoes least active?

Anytime the sun is completely out and temperatures are high, mosquito activity is at its lowest. They avoid peak sun temperatures.

Do mosquitoes stay out all night?

Most mosquitoes are nocturnal and more active in evenings. However, if temperatures drop below 60°F at night, they may seek shelter.

At what temperature are mosquitoes active?

Mosquitoes activate from hibernation at 50°F. The ideal climate is around 80°F with 80% humidity for peak activity.
