What Type of Blood Do Mosquitoes Like?

Why some people get bitten more than others based on blood type.

Type A
Least Preferred

There are several reasons why mosquitoes target certain people and leave others alone. Some has to do with smell, some with appearance, but it also comes down to genetics and blood type.

Studies indicate that certain blood types are much more appealing to these blood-sucking insects. This is why some people enjoy outdoor events during mosquito feeding times completely unbothered while others become a mosquito feeding ground.

What Attracts Mosquitoes?

Female mosquitoes have evolved sensory organs that give them surprisingly effective ways to track humans and animals:

Carbon Dioxide

The biggest attractant. Mosquitoes detect trace amounts of CO2 in the air with their antennae.

Smell (Palps)

Sensory organs detect fragrances and odors like lactic acid in sweat or alcohol on breath.

Thermal Tracking

Eyes have developed to detect heat signals in addition to movement and shadows.

Blood Type

Given a choice between Type O and Type A, studies show mosquitoes prefer Type O blood.

What Blood Type Do Mosquitoes Like?

Different blood types carry unique proteins called antigens that cover red blood cell surfaces. Mosquitoes are definitely attracted to one type over others:

Studies show mosquitoes are 2x more likely to target individuals with Type O blood than those with Type A blood. Type B falls somewhere in between.

Type A (+/-)

Contains only A antigens

Type B (+/-)

Contains only B antigens

Type AB (+/-)

Contains AB antigens

Type O (+/-)

Contains no antigens

Antigen Secretions: Individuals produce these antigens in body secretions. Type A carriers secrete Type A antigens, while Type O carriers secrete a Type H antigen (a precursor to other blood types).

What the Studies Show

Three different studies have proven that Type O blood is the preferred blood type:

1970s

Study on malaria vectors indicated mosquitoes preferred Type O blood over other types.

2004

Study showed mosquitoes preferred Type O to Type A based on blood type and antigen secretions.

2019

Study tried to determine why Type O is preferred but was unable to find a definitive reason.

Why Blood Type Preference Matters

Why do mosquitoes prefer Type O? The exact reason is unknown. Studies show no impact on mosquito fertility, fecundity, or egg production. The only potential reason: Type O blood has the highest digestibility rate.

Why This Research Matters

The CDC identifies mosquitoes as the deadliest animals on the planet, spreading malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, zika virus, and more. Knowing blood type preferences helps disease experts model how diseases spread and make recommendations for high-risk individuals.

Other Things That Attract Mosquitoes

Chemicals, enzymes, and bacteria on the body
Odors from consumption of certain foods
Ammonia and high sugar levels in sweat
People who have recently exercised (higher core temperature, profuse sweating)
Pregnant women (release more CO2, higher core temperature)

How to Prevent Mosquitoes

Prevent Bites

Apply repellent containing at least 20% DEET to exposed skin.

Reduce Populations

Combine habitat modification, pesticide application, and exclusion to eliminate egg-laying sites and home access.

Mosquito Blood Type FAQs

What is a mosquito's least favorite blood type?

According to research, Type A blood consistently appears to be mosquitoes' least favorite blood type, falling behind both Type O and Type B.

What is a mosquito's favorite blood type?

Several studies confirm that Type O blood is a female mosquito's favorite. While the reason is uncertain, Type O blood appears to be the easiest for mosquitoes to digest.

How do mosquitoes tell the difference between blood types?

Mosquitoes have excellent sensory organs with an exceptional sense of smell. Different blood types are identified by chemical signals secreted from skin in sweat and other bodily fluids.
