How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Indoor and outdoor control methods, natural deterrents, and prevention strategies.

The distinct buzz of a mosquito flying by your ears is one of the most annoying sounds when trying to relax. Beyond annoyance, mosquitoes pose a direct health threat to humans and animals as persistent bloodsucking insects.

There are several ways to get rid of and prevent mosquitoes, but it takes effort to minimize populations and prevent bites.

Dangers of Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes are the deadliest animal globally. When females bite, they pass diseases through saliva: malaria, West Nile virus, Zika virus, dengue fever, and others. Thousands of illness cases occur in America yearly, with many resulting in death.

Why Are Mosquitoes Hard to Get Rid Of?

Unlike most bugs, mosquitoes' food source is blood from humans and animals, so they are always attracted to people wherever they are.

Hard to Target

Tiny, fly erratically, difficult to see and swat. Hide in tiny spaces where sprays may not reach.

Rapid Reproduction

Lay 100+ eggs at a time. Reach adult stage within one week. Populations explode quickly.

Minimal Water Needed

Only need a bottle cap of water to lay eggs. Almost any outdoor setting becomes a breeding ground.

Neighborhood Problem

Even with your own control efforts, mosquitoes can breed in neighbors' yards, making your efforts futile.

Mosquito Treatment Strategies

A thorough strategy combining extermination, prevention, and repelling is necessary:

Extermination

Pesticide sprays kill adults. Growth regulators stop larvae from developing into mature mosquitoes. Foggers turn liquid into aerosol to cover all surfaces in dense foliage.

Prevention

Remove or treat standing water. Implement exclusion strategies to prevent mosquitoes from entering homes.

Repelling

Repellents on people deter biting. Without blood meals, females cannot produce eggs (need protein from blood).

Get Rid of Mosquitoes Fast: Treat breeding areas with growth regulators (ponds, bird baths, fountains). Empty pet dishes. Use pesticide foggers to permeate dense foliage where adults hide during the day.

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes Inside

Indoor mosquito presence usually means a few adults found their way inside. They remain inactive during day/night, becoming active at sunrise and sunset to feed.

Fly Swatters:Manual termination when spotted
Bug Zappers:Attract and eliminate hands-free
Fans:Strong air currents prevent landing
Mosquito Netting:Physical barrier protection
Seal Access Points:Repair torn window screens, close doors/windows

Note: Indoor pesticide use is not recommended as fumes may be unhealthy for humans to breathe.

Heavy Mosquito Activity?

Professional treatment targets breeding sites and adult populations.

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes Outside

Outdoor control is a larger project. In addition to removing standing water and applying pesticides:

Yard Maintenance

Clean up dead leaves
Eliminate trash where water collects
Remove dead branches, trees, stumps
Trim back overgrown foliage
Keep grass cut short

Water Management

Reduce watering frequency
Proper irrigation to avoid puddles
Clear gutters and drains
Check potted plant reservoirs
Use growth regulators in ponds

Natural Predators

Attract birds with feeders
Install bat boxes
Introduce fish, frogs, turtles to ponds
Use nematodes and bacteria in water
Plant marigolds, lemongrass, basil, mint

Other Methods

CO2-releasing bug zappers
Lay cedar mulch (repels & absorbs water)
Create mosquito drowning traps
Use pesticide foggers in foliage

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes Naturally

Essential Oils:Lavender, lemon, eucalyptus, peppermint, clove, tea tree
Coconut & Neem Oil:Mix with water and spray on skin
Citronella Candles:Lemon scent that deters mosquitoes
Garlic Cloves:Strong odor deters (smell unpleasant to some)
Coffee Grounds:Burn to release pungent smoke they avoid
Sage & Rosemary:Burn to release deterring scent
Basil Plants:Grow near entry points to prevent entry

How to Keep Mosquitoes Away (Repellents)

The CDC recommends repellents with at least 20% DEET to prevent mosquito-borne infections. Apply like sunscreen every few hours.

Apply before sunrise and sunset when mosquitoes are most active. Permethrin-treated clothing also works for several months.

How to Apply DEET

  • Apply to clothing and exposed skin
  • Wipe in for maximum coverage
  • Avoid eyes, nose, mouth, wounds
  • For face: spray hands first, then apply
  • Reapply after sweating or rain
  • 10%+ DEET should not be used on children

Getting Rid of Mosquitoes Permanently

Mosquitoes are extremely persistent. Permanent control requires ongoing effort and multiple treatment methods:

  • Follow-up treatment 2 weeks after initial (time for eggs to mature)
  • Treatments throughout spring, summer, and fall
  • Pause during dormant cold periods
  • Integrated pest management combining multiple strategies
  • Regular maintenance and ongoing treatments

Schedule a Mosquito Inspection

If you have noticed increased mosquito activity, schedule an inspection with a licensed EcoGuard technician. We will evaluate your property, identify problematic areas, and devise an integrated pest management plan to bring mosquito populations under control.

How to Get Rid of Mosquitoes FAQs

How do you get rid of mosquitoes in the house?

Use a fly swatter or bug zapper. Full infestations indoors are unlikely, so being vigilant for roaming mosquitoes is typically the best approach. Bug zappers are a more hands-off solution.

What kills mosquitoes instantly?

The quickest way is to smash them when they land. Other methods include certain chemical pesticide combinations or natural mosquito deterrents that are also effective at killing mosquitoes.

How do I get rid of mosquitoes in my room at night?

Use a bug zapper designed to attract mosquitoes by releasing carbon dioxide. These draw mosquitoes to an electrified surface that terminates them on contact.
