What Attracts Cockroaches Into Your Home?

Understanding what draws cockroaches to your home is the first step in preventing infestations.

Cockroaches primarily need 3 things to survive: food, water, and shelter. If you are wondering why you have seen cockroaches inside or around your home, ask yourself if any of these things are readily available.

Even the cleanest houses can have cockroaches, so ensuring that attractants are minimized is the first step in preventing future problems. These resources are necessary for cockroaches to thrive in each stage of their life cycle.

The 3 Main Attractants

Food

Crumbs, grease, debris

Water

Leaks, moisture, condensation

Shelter

Dark, warm hiding spots

Food Sources

Food is the strongest attractant for cockroaches. They are omnivorous scavengers that will eat just about anything including grease, dust, dirt, paper, soap, hair, and other cockroaches.

Kitchen and Pantry

Prime targets for cockroaches. Crumbs on the ground, grease on the stove, food debris under appliances, and dirty dishes in the sink all attract them.

Strong Smells

Cockroaches have extremely sensitive smell detected by antennae. Even candles, potpourri, and laundry soap can attract them if they smell like food.

Pet Supplies

Pet food and water left out provides perfect sustenance. Store in airtight containers and rinse bowls to remove particles.

Other Debris

Can feed on dead skin, hair, dust, paper, and more. Found in bathrooms, garages, and laundry rooms due to these food sources.

Water Sources

Second to food, cockroaches need water to survive. They only need about one drop per day, so they can find water in potted plant soil, kitchen sponges, and condensation.

How to Reduce Water Sources:

Fix leaky pipes and faucets

Seal cracks around toilets and sinks

Remove standing water sources

Rinse sponges with bleach mix

Layer potted plants with gravel

Use drain covers

Wipe down condensation surfaces

Two-fold impact: Eliminating water sources prevents attraction AND prevents breeding since cockroaches cannot successfully reproduce without adequate hydration.

Shelter and Accessibility

Cockroaches prefer to avoid weather extremes like intense heat, cold, or rain. Once they find a safe, dark, humid place to hide, they release pheromones that attract other cockroaches.

Accessibility

Cockroaches only need a crack the width of a coin to sneak through. Sealing all access points requires professional expertise to find hidden entry points.

Other Cockroaches

Cockroaches are social insects that attract others using pheromones. If you see one, there are usually several more in a nest nearby.

Cardboard Boxes

Cockroaches can consume paper and cellulose. Boxes in garages and attics provide both home and food source. Use clear plastic bins instead.

Neighbors

If you share walls (apartments, townhomes), unsanitary neighbors can attract cockroaches that find their way to your home. Document and report to property managers.

What Attracts Cockroaches Outside?

Landscaping

Your yard may provide food, water, and shelter. Standing water, hiding places under rocks and bushes, and organic detritus make yards attractive. Once established outside, it is only a matter of time before they come inside.

Lights

Some species are attracted to certain wavelengths of light while others are deterred. Seeing roaches scurry when lights turn on indicates light-avoidant species.

Trash

Outdoor trash cans provide abundant, consistent food from decomposing organic materials. Also provide water and shelter. Treat with residual pesticides and clean occasionally.

Location

Homes in warm and/or humid climates have higher potential for year-round problems. Colder climates see more activity when temperatures drop and roaches seek warmth inside.

Different Species, Different Preferences

American Cockroach

Attracted to fermenting foods like fruit and beer. Prefer warm, moist, humid environments. Found near boilers, basements, and plumbing.

German Cockroach

Drawn to grease buildup, organic waste, and sweet foods. Prefer warm, moist environments. Found under kitchen sinks, pantries, cupboards. Nocturnal.

Brown Banded Cockroach

Found in warm, dry, elevated places like bookshelves and picture frames. Feed on cellulose and starchy items like paper and glue.

Oriental Cockroach

Attracted to dark, damp, cool environments. Found under mulch, leaf debris, storm drains, and sewers. Indoors: basements, crawl spaces, cellars.

How to Prevent and Get Rid of Cockroaches

Prevention is about keeping cockroaches from the things they need to survive. Follow the Eliminate, Clean, Store strategy:

Eliminate

Get rid of exposed food and pet food. Take out trash every evening so roaches have nothing to attract them when most active.

Clean

Regularly wipe surfaces, wash dishes, sweep and mop floors. Deep clean stove/oven for grease and under appliances occasionally.

Store

Seal foods in airtight containers (plastic, glass, ceramic). Raise stored goods off floor. Eliminate unnecessary cardboard.

Additional steps: Fix leaks, seal cracks and gaps with caulking or silicone sealants, and apply residual pesticide spray around appliances, water sources, and food areas.

Cockroach Attractant FAQs

What attracts cockroaches outside?

Cockroaches will be drawn to your home before ever stepping foot inside. They will look for an abundance of water, food, and shelter. If there are trash cans outside that are poorly contained and standing water, cockroaches will find everything they need to survive. If there are bushes, overgrown grass, rocks, or mulch, the cockroaches will have everything they need to stay hidden.

Why do cockroaches suddenly appear?

Cockroaches that appear suddenly are usually the result of weather that just passed. Was it extremely hot, cold, or wet right before the increase in cockroach visibility? If so, then that likely prompted the cockroach sightings. If not, cockroaches may have already been active and you are just now starting to notice them.

How can I get rid of cockroaches fast?

Getting rid of cockroaches fast can be done with a local spot treatment using a pesticide spray. That being said, this might not get rid of a larger cockroach infestation. For larger infestations, it is best to call professionals who can treat the entire home and increase the chances that your cockroach problem is eradicated.

What attracts cockroaches to your bedroom?

Cockroaches are typically attracted to food and water, and it is unlikely that there is a source of water in your bedroom unless it is attached to a bathroom. There is most likely a source of food or something that smells like food that cockroaches are being attracted to.
