A cockroach's lifespan typically lasts between 7-10 months but can reach 15 months. Lifespan depends on species, available resources, and environmental conditions. All cockroaches progress from egg to nymph to adult, then become fertile and reproduce.
Stage 1: Cockroach Eggs
After mating, cockroaches produce a leathery egg case called an ootheca within a week. Oothecas hold 10-55 eggs and are carried by the female until deposited somewhere safe, warm, and humid near food and water. Eggs hatch in 1-2 months. Female cockroaches produce 4-14 oothecas in their lifetime.
American
~16 eggs per ootheca
10 cases/lifetime
Hatch time: 6-8 weeks
Deposited immediately near food/water
German
30-40 eggs per ootheca
4-8 cases/lifetime
Hatch time: 28-30 days
Carried until ready to hatch
Brown Banded
16-18 eggs per ootheca
13-14 cases/lifetime
Hatch time: ~70 days
Attached to surfaces after 1-2 days
Oriental
~16 eggs per ootheca
8 cases/lifetime
Hatch time: 40-80 days
Deposited after 1-5 days
Stage 2: Cockroach Nymphs
Nymphs are adolescent cockroaches that have not reached maturity. They go through 6-14 molting periods called instars. Nymphs start lighter in color and darken as they develop. The nymph phase completes in 60-900 days depending on species. Molted skins indicate a breeding, growing population.
American
6-14 molts
Development: 160-970 days
~600 days avg
Longest development, wingless until adult
German
~6 molts
Development: ~60 days
Shortest nymph stage
Darker than adults, flightless
Brown Banded
6-8 molts
Development: 8-31 weeks
Oriental
7-10 molts
Development: 24-130 weeks
~52 weeks optimal
Much lighter than black adults

After the final molt, cockroaches reach maturity with fully developed wings and ability to reproduce. Adults grow to be 1.5 to 3 inches long. This adult period can last six months to over a year.
American
Adult lifespan: 360-400 days
Eggs laid: Up to 160
Size: 1.5-2 inches
Reddish brown, lighter band around head, both sexes fly
German
Adult lifespan: 20-30 weeks
Eggs laid: Up to 400
Size: Smaller than American
Can result in 10,000+ descendants in one year
Brown Banded
Adult lifespan: 13-45 weeks
Eggs laid: Up to 250
Oriental
Adult lifespan: 5-26 weeks
Eggs laid: 130-200
Shortest adult lifespan
How Long Do Cockroaches Live?
Species is the largest determining factor. Environmental factors can drastically extend or shorten lifespan.
American Cockroach
Oothecas are dark, 8mm long. Females produce 1 per month, up to 10 total with 16 eggs each. Hatch in 1.5-2 months. Nymphs start white/light grey, darken to reddish-brown over up to 14 molts. Adults are 1.5-2 inches with flight capability and can live 400 days. Total lifespan: up to 3.75 years in optimal conditions (rare due to predators and pesticides).
German Cockroach
Most prolific breeders with up to 40 eggs per ootheca. Light brown ribbed cases, 7-9mm. Females carry until hatch (~1 month), produce up to 8 cases. Nymphs darker than adults, lighten over 6-7 instars in ~60 days. Adults light brown with 2 dark stripes. Males live 100-150 days, females 190-200 days. Total lifespan: ~300 days.
Brown Banded Cockroach
Up to 8 small oothecas with 16 eggs each. Incubation ~70 days. Oothecas attached in high places. Nymphs molt 6-8 times over up to 31 weeks. Adults survive 13-45 weeks producing up to 250 eggs. Total lifespan: up to 1.5 years.
Oriental Cockroach
Dark smooth oothecas similar to American, ~16 eggs per case, 8 cases per lifetime. Deposited after ~5 days. Nymphs much lighter than dark black adults, mature after ~7 molts over up to 130 weeks. Females survive ~180 days, males ~160 days. Total lifespan: up to 3.25 years in optimal conditions.
How Many Offspring Can a Cockroach Produce?
Cockroaches create problematic infestations due to their reproductive capabilities. Each species produces several oothecas with at least 16 eggs each.
German (Most Prolific)
~400
eggs per lifetime
Can result in 10,000+ descendants/year
Brown Banded
~250
eggs per lifetime
American
~160
eggs per lifetime
Oriental
~130
eggs per lifetime

Cockroach Life Cycle FAQs
How long is the life cycle of a cockroach?
The average life cycle ranges between 20-30 weeks. Depending on species, they can survive several years with optimal conditions. Resource availability and environmental conditions affect development.
What kills cockroaches instantly?
Borax is a simple, safe remedy. This powder can be sprinkled into infested areas where it dehydrates cockroaches and kills them quickly.
