Do Cockroaches Bite?

The truth about cockroach bites, what they look like, and the real dangers of cockroaches.

Did something bite you in the middle of the night? Bug bites are often from mosquitoes, house spiders, fleas, or bed bugs. Rarely do cockroaches bite humans, but if you have only seen cockroaches around your property, you might be worried they were the culprit.

Few insects gross us out more than cockroaches, and the thought of one crawling into your bed at night and biting you can be disturbing. The good news is that cockroach bites are extremely rare.

The Short Answer

Cockroaches almost never bite humans. 99.99% of people will live full lives without ever getting bitten by a cockroach. Their mouths are not strong enough to pierce human skin, and they are terrified of humans.

Why Cockroaches Do Not Bite Humans

Mouths Are Not Strong Enough

The mouth of a cockroach is not strong enough to pierce human skin. Most cases of cockroach biting are anecdotal and have not been verified. They simply are not capable of delivering a damaging bite.

They Do Not Feed on Humans

Cockroaches will not bite or feed on human blood like mosquitoes or bed bugs. They have an omnivorous diet preferring starches, grease, and meat. They prefer shed skin and hair over direct human contact.

They Are Afraid of Humans

Cockroaches are terrified of humans and try to avoid us at all costs. They usually wait until we are sleeping at night to venture through homes looking for food. They are just as disturbed about encountering us as we are of them.

When Cockroaches Might Bite

There are only two rare scenarios when cockroaches might try to bite humans:

Severe Infestations

During a serious infestation when the population becomes very large and food becomes scarce, a starving cockroach might try to bite out of desperation. This is extremely rare.

Eating Something on You

A cockroach could bite you accidentally when trying to eat something on you, like food scraps on your fingertips. This would most likely happen during an infestation when food is scarce.

Where Do Cockroaches Bite?

If bitten, it would most likely be on areas that accumulate food residue:

What Do Roach Bites Look Like?

Cockroach bites are so rare that there are no substantiated photographs of what a bite looks like. Based on their mouthparts, bites might look like little red welts, similar to mosquito or bed bug bites, and would only be 1-4 millimeters long.

Sharp pain (1-2 seconds)

Itching / irritation

Rashes

Swelling

Red raised bumps

Not Poisonous: Cockroach bites are not poisonous. Cockroaches are not venomous and cannot even pierce your skin. However, they may carry bacteria that can cause infection if not treated properly.

How to Treat a Roach Bite

It is important to properly treat a cockroach bite (or any insect bite). Some people may have allergic reactions to cockroach saliva, and cockroaches may carry bacteria that can cause infection.

1

Apply an ice pack to reduce swelling

2

Apply aloe vera gel to soothe the skin

3

Apply a disinfectant to the bite

Seek Medical Attention If:

Severe pain, swelling, or itching

Difficulty breathing

Low blood pressure

Important: Do NOT scratch the bite. Scratching can irritate the skin, open the wound, and increase infection risk. Wash with warm water and soap, apply aloe vera, and cover with a bandage if needed.

The Real Dangers of Cockroaches

The most dangerous thing about cockroaches is not their bite but the pathogens they carry. Since they live in and explore dirty places like dumpsters, sewers, and bathrooms, they pick up all sorts of germs and contaminants.

Disease Transmission

They can spread Salmonella, E. coli, Dysentery, Cholera, Typhoid fever, Listeriosis, Gastroenteritis, and many other pathogens through contaminated surfaces and food.

Allergies and Asthma

Cockroach allergens can trigger asthma attacks in certain people and cause allergy-related anaphylactic shock. Their droppings and shed skins contain these allergens.

How to Prevent Cockroaches

The best way to prevent cockroaches and their bites is by keeping it clean! Clean the kitchen area every week and wipe down floors, sinks, stoves, and countertops.

Seal food in airtight containers

Avoid piling things in corners (dirty laundry, newspapers, dishes)

Seal gaps around your home, especially siding and windowsills

Fix leaks (leaks give cockroaches easy water access)

Shower before bed to remove food residue from skin

Avoid eating in bed to prevent attracting pests

Cockroaches rarely bite humans, but if they do it will most likely happen at night when you are asleep. Cockroaches roam your house at night when it is dark and less activity is happening. A starving cockroach might be drawn to you if there are scraps of food in your bed or food residue on your body. Practice good hygiene and avoid eating in bed.

What happens if a cockroach bites you?

If you get bitten, wash the skin with warm, soapy water to remove bacteria and apply aloe vera to prevent itching or swelling. Call emergency first response if you think you are suffering from an allergic reaction.
