Why Do Stink Bugs Smell Bad?

The science behind their defense mechanism and how to remove them without the stink.

As their name implies, stink bugs can release an odor that smells really bad. They produce this unpleasant smell as a defense mechanism to protect themselves from predators.

This smell is the result of chemicals produced in glands in their abdomen. Stink bugs can also release smells containing pheromones that attract other stink bugs, which becomes problematic when they move inside during fall.

Two Types of Odor

Defense Odor

Released when threatened to repel predators

Aggregation Odor

Released when safe to attract other stink bugs

What Do Stink Bugs Smell Like?

Stink bugs produce a chemical that smells somewhere between cilantro or coriander and a skunk. When analyzed, the chemical contains compounds similar to what is found in the coriander plant.

This smell will not be too impressive from a single stink bug, but the chemical contains an aggregation pheromone that attracts others. One stink bug can attract hundreds to nest and hibernate. When this occurs, the accumulated smell becomes overwhelming.

What is the Main Reason Stink Bugs Stink?

Defense Mechanism

Unable to defend themselves in other ways, stink bugs rely on smell to deter predators like birds, fish, and reptiles with sensitive olfactory senses.

Spray Capability

Some species can spray the chemical several inches to repel predators that get too close.

Release Triggers

They release through body holes when they feel threatened and also when they are killed or crushed.

Why Do Stink Bugs Stink When Killed?

Stink bugs store chemicals in their bodies, so when they are crushed, the chemicals are released. This makes treatment complicated because disturbing OR crushing stink bugs both result in the foul odor. When removing stink bugs, it is best to contain them to trap the odor they release.

Can Stink Bugs Attract Other Stink Bugs with Their Smell?

Yes. In addition to defense, stink bugs release chemicals containing aggregation pheromones to communicate with each other. The message lets other stink bugs know there is a safe place to hide during winter.

This is important because stink bugs enter a hibernation phase called diapause when it gets cold. Once safely hidden, they slowly release this smell as a guide for others. This becomes problematic when hundreds or thousands gather in wall cavities or other hidden spaces.

Is the Smell of Stink Bugs Dangerous?

Not Toxic to Breathe

The smell is unpleasant but not toxic to humans who breathe in the odor.

Skin Irritation Possible

The chemical secretions can become a skin irritant for people with sensitive skin if they come into direct contact.

Do Stink Bugs Smell All the Time?

No. Stink bugs control when they smell and what kind of smell to produce. There is a small difference between the chemical makeup of their defense odor and aggregation odor. Both are unpleasant to humans and hard to differentiate, but stink bugs can easily tell the difference. One is released when threatened; the other when safe and hidden.

How Do Stink Bugs Release Their Smell?

Abdominal Glands

Located on the edges of their bodies to produce and release the chemical.

Evapatoriums

Shallow holes shaped to increase fluid's ability to evaporate faster.

Decanter Effect

Spreads surface area of fluid, allowing it to breathe and release into the air.

On-Demand Production

Produced only when needed so odor is released the second a threat is identified.

How to Get Rid of Stink Bugs

Outdoors (Warm Weather)

Treat infested plants with insecticidal soap mix. Spray thoroughly or drench plants. Use soap traps to draw and drown them.

Indoors (Cold Weather)

Do not crush them. Use a vacuum cleaner to suck them up. Clean the infested area and seal access points to prevent return.

Is stink bug odor harmful?

The smell of stink bugs is unpleasant but is not harmful to humans or animals. The smell is designed to act as a deterrent but does not have any impacts on any potential predators other than disturbing their olfactory senses.
