Common Supermarket Pests

Pests that are found in restaurants can be catastrophic to business because of the fact that they are all vectors for disease. Each pest type introduces several types of pathogens that can contaminate food sources as they are sold to customers. Contamination can lead to declines in reputation, bad publicity, and even fines and closure if deemed severe enough. It is imperative to the restaurant that incidents that involve these pests are prevented all together and treated immediately if identified.

The most common pest types in restaurants are generally:

  • Rodents – Rats & mice are extremely clever and are known to be able to destroy an entire restaurant’s food supplies in short time if not managed properly.
  • Cockroaches & Ants – These invasive pests are some of the most persistent pests that can be difficult to eradicate after they have already infested an area.
  • Stored Product (Pantry) Pests – Weevils & Indian meal moths are both pests that can get passed on by suppliers. This can negatively impact the restaurant’s reputation.

Areas of Concern Outside

Every restaurant has some primary areas of concern outside that always pose a threat to maintaining a pest free environment.

  1. Bright Exterior Lights: Lots of flying insects are drawn to bright lights. Bright parking lot light attract a large number of bugs which inevitably spread to smaller building lights close to open windows and doors. These bugs will eventually find their way in, so the use of bug zappers strategically placed away from entrances and exits is a way to reduce the bugs drawn in by lights.
  2. Entrance & Exit Access Points: Doors and windows should be kept closed whenever they are not in use. They should have air curtains installed to help prevent flying bugs from coming in and door sweeps to block rodents from using the gap under a door to gain access to a restaurant.
  3. Dumpsters & Waste Collection: Dumpsters are usually outside and contain mostly food that has been discarded. The sheer volume of food will attract rodents, roaches, ants, and other bugs which will require on-going monitoring. These containers should be somewhere away from your building and should be tightly secured at all times.

Areas of Concern Inside

The inside of each building presents an even bigger problem with so many places to hide:

  1. Dining Areas: Next to in the food itself, this is possibly the worst place you want to have bugs and rodents be seen. Customers generally don’t approve of pest infested restaurants and dining areas that have pest activity can become an immediate problem. Tables and seats should be regularly cleared and wiped down to minimize the amount of food and crumbs that pests can feed on.
  2. Food Prep Areas: Areas where food is being prepared likely has scraps laying around. These areas will need to be kept clean to ensure that they don’t attract pests and rodents.
  3. Storage Areas: Dry storage can be difficult to maintain once pantry pests take hold. Avoiding them will require a good level of vigilance when it comes to incoming food deliveries. It is also important to elevate food off the ground by 6 inches and kept 12 inches from the wall to be able to inspect all food supplies. Following a FIFO (first in, first out) strategy will ensure that old product is sold first to reduce the chances of something going bad and attracting more bugs.
  4. Trash: All trash cans are an immediate threat and should be lined and kept shut whenever they are not being used. In the event of spillage, the trash cans themselves should also be rinsed off and kept clean.
  5. Drains: Floor drains and sink drains or anywhere washing can be done is usually a breeding ground for drain flies. Ensuring that drains are clear of debris and regularly disinfected with cleaning agents should help stop fly populations.
  6. Employee Locker Room: Sometimes, employees are the cause of bugs in a restaurant. Leaving open food containers and drinks in lockers can lead to ants and roaches in a short period if not closely monitored. Pest prevention strategy will be provided to restaurant employees and staff to ensure they know how to avoid attracting pests and when to report pest activity.

Pre Pest Control Service Preparation for Restaurants

Since food preparation has to be accounted for when providing restaurants with pest control services, there are specific steps restaurants must take to prepare.

  • Schedule service during off hours
  • Repair any clear external access points that could potentially allow pests in.
  • Clean floors and areas with pest activity prior to service
  • Remove live plants and seal things like fish tanks to protect against overspray
  • Take out trash
  • Place all food in sealed containers and wrap to prevent contamination
  • Also call to double check to see if additional prep is needed

On-going Pest Prevention Strategy

Pest control strategies are much more effective when there is participation from restaurant staff. Ensuring that certain steps of service are built into staff procedures can help minimize the possibility of a rodent outbreak. The things that restaurant staff and management can do to help are:

  • Quickly clearing food when completed
  • Keeping kitchen spotless
  • Keeping outdoor patio dining areas clear of food
  • Taking out trash when its full
  • Implementing bait systems
  • Reporting signs of pest activity

Restaurant Pest Control Checklist

Having a checklist to use on a regular basis might help your staff have a better understanding of the different steps they can take to help. Below are just a few of the tasks they can do to help reduce the possibility of pest activity.

  • Are there open sources of food that should be sealed and put away?
  • Are all surfaces clean and free of clutter?
  • Are trash cans all emptied?
  • Are there any leaks or spills?
  • Has the patio been cleared?
  • Are there dirty tables?
  • Is the prep area clean and ready for use?

Restaurant Pest Control FAQs

  • How can restaurants prevent pests?

The 2 primary ways to prevent pests is through exclusion and removing the attractant.

    • Exclusion includes blocking access by sealing entry points.
    • Removing the attractant includes eliminating the source of food or water that is drawing them inside.

  • What is the best way to deal with pests in your food establishment?

There are several ways to help reduce and combat pest problems but the only way to really address the on-going fight against pests it to hire a team of professional experts who have years of pest control experience dealing with restaurants. Otherwise, you run the risk of allowing a slip up to occur which won’t be good for business.

  • What are the 3 methods of pest control?

Pest control is generally attempted through exclusion, prevention / deterrence, and treatment. Treatment can include both chemical pesticide / rodenticide applications and physical removal methods.

  • How do restaurants get rid of mice?

The best way to get rid of mice in restaurants is with sticky or snap traps. Chemical application where food is prepared generally isn’t recommended so poison baits are not used in this situation.
