Voles are small rodents that are sometimes mistaken for rats, gophers, or mice and cause damage to your yard. They will dig burrows that have several runways that lead to holes all over your lawn or garden. Unlike their other burrowing rodent cousins, voles have no problem coming above ground to scavenge and feed. However, like gophers, they will chew through power cables that block their path. Voles generally feed on the roots, stalks, and bark of vegetation around your property as well as seeds, fruits, grains, and nuts. Not only can these pests destroy gardens, but they will also kill immature trees and shrubs by gnawing around bark located low to the ground, which cuts off a tree’s supply of nutrients and water.

EcoGuard Pest Management specializes in vole control and our highly trained technicians are able to identify where vole mitigation strategies will be most effective. Vole Information

EcoGuard Pest Management is a leader in Vole control methodology & service.

Voles are small rodents that look like field mice to the untrained eye. They are usually brown, black, or reddish depending on the species and usually live in shallow burrows that open up to a wide network of underground runways that take them safely to their favorite food sources. These runways are usually one of the indicators that you have a vole problem and not another burrowing rodent like gophers and moles. These runways look like veins of dirt all over your lawn and are usually more unsightly than mounds left by other burrowing rodents.

The other big problem presented by voles is that they can produce several litters a year with roughly 5 voles per litter. This rapid rate of reproduction can lead to a full-blown vole infestation relatively quickly if not treated appropriately. In fact, if proper mitigation efforts are not implemented, an acre of land can contain up to several hundred voles which will devastate crops, lawns, flower beds, orchards, and immature trees. Voles are also active day and night and all year round without a period of hibernation. This means that during wintertime when food is scarce, vole’s damage will destroy what vegetation is left.

Signs Of Voles

Runways – These 1-inch-wide paths look like veins across your landscaping and usually lead to tunnel openings that voles use to traverse your yard without having to worry about threats from above.

Burrow Entrances – While the voles prefer the openings to under the shelter of low hanging vegetation and ground cover, sometimes these holes are visible and will have a runway leading to it.

Dying Plants – Voles will feed on roots of young plants so if there are signs of plants dying without explanation, the roots are usually destroyed.

Girdled Bark – Irregular gnawing that occurs around the base of immature trees is usually done by voles which cuts off a tree’s supply of nutrition, eventually killing the tree.

Delayed Fruiting – Plants that are unable to fruit when scheduled could be a sign of root destruction or girdling.

Vole Treatment

Vole FAQs

  • What is the best way to get rid of voles?

Getting rid of voles can be difficult given how pervasive they are. Some of the most effective vole extermination methods are baiting and trapping. These 2 methods of exterminating voles will help to reduce vole populations by targeting areas that are most likely to be in the path of voles.

  • How much does it cost to get rid of voles?

Vole control costs fluctuates depending on the size of area that needs treatment. Most homeowners pay between $500 - $600 for vole extermination due to the cost and time necessary to effectively treat for voles. That said, EcoGuard prices competitively to provide the best value possible.

  • What is the fastest way to get rid of voles?

Trapping may be the most effective and efficient way of reducing vole populations. These traps are placed at the openings of runways near food sources which put them directly in the path of vole when they go to eat.

  • Do I need an exterminator for voles?

If previous DIY methods of vole extermination and exclusion have failed, having a trained and licensed EcoGuard pest control technician there to help may prove useful. Our experience gives us insight into how to deal with these pests effectively using the proper tools like baits and traps.
