Experienced Thrip Exterminators

Thrips are a destructive garden pest that damage fruit, leaves, and plant appearance. Thrips will cause leaves to become papery, develop lesions, and prematurely fall off. If an infestation has gotten out of hand, this could stunt plant growth and fruit development. Certain plants and vegetable crops are more susceptible to thrip damage, especially when they haven’t matured fully. In addition to the physical damage thrips inflict on plants, they are also known to be vectors for several plant diseases that can damage or kill specific plants. While thrips pose a significant threat to several plants, they rarely pose a threat to the survival of heartier plants like shrubs or trees.

At EcoGuard Pest Management our maintenance program will ensure that your home and garden is thrip free all year long. We are experienced and knowledgeable in all forms of thrip treatment methods. Thrip Information

Thrip facts for species found locally

Thrips are slender flying bugs that have long narrow wings and come in a variety of colors like white, yellow, brown, and black. There are several species of thrips and it’s important to identify which species you are dealing with to ensure the correct control methods are being utilized. Understanding which species are attracted to specific plants helps identify the species of thrip and while some species will be identified as harmless, others will need to be exterminated. Different species also have different natural predators which can be recruited to help eliminate thrip populations.

Thrip’s life cycle from egg to adulthood takes about 2 weeks and develops through 2 pupal stages before reaching full maturity. In spring females lay up to 80 eggs on the underside of leaves which then hatch into wingless larvae. The speed at which thrip reproduce can result in 12 -15 generations of thrips emerging in one year. This rapid rate of reproduction can cause a small thrip problem to explode into a much more persistent infestation.

Thorough Inspection – It all starts with an inspection of your yard and garden to identify any thrip activity and how severe the infestation already is.

Organic Insecticide – The most severe infestations can be treated with a pyrethrin based insecticide which is effective against thrips. That said, this should be applied before thrips are seen to ensure that thrips do not cause problems in the future. Reason being thrips can be difficult to target because of their mobility and feeding behavior.

Fungal Sprays – These sprays use an entomophatogenic fungus to slow the feeding and reproduction of thrips which successfully mitigates thrip populations.

Sticky Traps – Strategically placed blue sticky traps are designed to attract thrips. These are helpful for identifying growing thrip populations as well as keeping them under control.

Common Signs Of Thrips

Leaf Damage – Papery leaves with holes or plants with leave falling prematurely generally indicate the presence of thrips. Checking around the damage for the presence of thrips, pupae, and eggs will determine the cause.

Damaged Flowers / Fruit – Feeding thrips like to eat up flowers and fruit which can cause serious damages. They are known to decimate roses from the inside out and known to damage the skins of fruits and vegetables to the point where they are unsellable.

Beneficial Insects – Seeing thrips’ natural predators like lady bugs and lace wings could indicate that they are feeding on thrips. Each species of thrip has their own specific predators so knowing which predatory bugs are present in your garden might provide some clues as to the species of thrip you have to fight off.

Other Plant Disease – Thrips will weaken a plants ability to fight off mold and disease which increases the likelihood that disease and mold will spread as thrips move from plant to plant.
