Termite Information

Termite pest control is becoming more and more necessary as they cause up billions of dollars in damage annually in the United States. The average cost of eliminating termites and repairing damages can exceed $8,000 if an infestation is not found in time and properly treated. Damages will often go unnoticed for a long time before termite activity is detected because colonies take time to fully mature. That said, once a colony has reached capacity it can have between 60,000 to one million termites which feed on wood cellulose and degrade the structural integrity of a dwelling.

Termites will enter a structure in different ways depending on what type of termite is attacking your home or business. There are specific termites that will swarm into a home via opening in attics and crawl spaces and attack any source of open wood framing. These drywood termites can appear in any area of a home and move through a structure extremely fast once the termite colony is mature. There is another type, subterranean termites, which colonize from underground and reach the foundation pillars via mud tubes and destroy a home from the ground up. The last major variety, dampwood termites, look for moist wood that is exposed to leaks or open water sources and will weaken rotting wood even further. No matter which type of termite your home or business might be under attack from, EcoGuard has experience in battling each and will ensure that a colony no longer presents a problem after treatment is completed.

Termite Inspection

WDO Inspection. Check for wood destroying organisms today.

Termites work day and night to consume the very wood products that make up your home. If not caught at an early stage they can cause significant damage to the structure. Unfortunately, most homeowners don’t know that they have termites until they notice the damage caused by them. Buying, selling, or just concerned? We will inspect the property, inside and out, for signs of pest infestations and conducive conditions that may lead to future infestation.

What we look for during a termite inspection:

  • All wood destroying organisms including termites, beetles, or fungus
  • Termite mud tubes and previous tube stains
  • Termite pellets (frass)
  • Previous termite treatment(s) and/or baiting systems
  • Wood boring beetle dust
  • Moisture problems in, under, or around the structure
  • Imperfections in baseboards, walls, and other structural component
  • Earth to wood contact

WDO Inspection Results

If termite damage or other evidence is found, the termite inspector will explain what was identified, where it was found, and an integrated treatment approach tailored to you and your property, along with methods to prevent future issues around your home. If zero evidence of these pests are found, you’re all set. We do recommend scheduling a termite inspection once a year to be sure your home stays termite free.

How Do I Get Rid Of Termites?

Solutions For Property Owners

Termites are common in our area and multiple termite colonies can live near your home. Most homes have experienced termites or will experience termites at some time. Once termites are identified in a home a professional must treat the home to eliminate the colony. Eliminating the termite swarmers does not eliminate the termite colony in the soil.

There are a few things homeowners can do for prevention:

1) Eliminate Moisture Problems:

  • Avoid moisture accumulation near the foundation. Divert water away with properly maintained clean downspouts, gutters, and splash blocks.
  • Pull or grade the ground near the foundation in order for surface water to drain away from the building.
  • Promptly repair leaking faucets, water pipes, and air conditioning units.
  • Seal entry points around water and utility lines or pipes.
  • Provide proper ventilation in the basement or crawl space to eliminate moisture (e.g., enhance cross ventilation, screen, and remove any vegetation covering vents, etc.)

2) Remove Termite Food Source:

  • Keep all wooden parts of the house foundation at least 6 inches above the soil, although an 18-inch gap between the soil and wooden portions of the building is ideal. Use concrete or steel supports, steps, etc. when in contact with soil.
  • Check decks and wooden fences regularly for damage. A minimum of 6 to 8 inches between ground level and porch steps, lattice work, door, or window frames, etc. is recommended.
  • Install trellises, vines, and trim plants so that they do not contact the house. Do not build flower planters against the house.
  • Avoid or minimize use of wood mulch next to the foundation (no more than a 2-inch depth is recommended). When mulch is used, avoid contact against the wood siding, frames of doors, and windows. Pea gravel or crushed stone are much less attractive to termites, ants, millipedes, crickets, and other pests.
  • Remove dead trees, debris, stumps, roots, and stacks of firewood from around the building.
  • Regularly inspect cracks or joints in concrete slabs for evidence of termites.

Ridding a home of termites requires special skills and is a job for professionals. Knowledge of building construction is needed to identify the critical areas where termites are likely to enter. Many of these potential points of entry are hidden and difficult to access.

Termite control also utilizes specialized equipment such as masonry drills, pumps, large-capacity tanks, and soil treatment rods. A typical treatment may involve hundreds of gallons of a liquid pesticide, known as a termiticide, injected into the ground alongside the foundation, beneath concrete slabs, and within foundation walls. "Do-it-yourself" products, sold to homeowners at retail stores or over the internet, will seldom eradicate an existing termite problem. Termites feed slowly and taking a few weeks to come to a decision regarding your termite control program makes little difference. It is more important to take your time to select a reputable pest control firm.

Use of insecticides like borates (disodium octaborate tetrahydrate) and/or pressure-treated wood (chromated copper arsenate) protect against termites and wood decay fungi. However, over time, even railroad ties, telephone poles and pressure treated wood can be subject to termite attack.

Termite FAQs

  • Can you do termite control yourself?

You can use liquid termite insecticides for barrier and soil treatment in addition to termite baits to protect your home. That said, do it yourself termite control methods often leave traces of termites behind which inevitably come back and need further service. There is also the risk that mixing and dispersing toxic chemicals in unsafe amounts can be harmful for pets and children if not applied properly.

  • What is the most effective termite control?

A liquid termite treatment with Termidor is the most effective method to treat termites. Termidor is highly effective and acts as a continual barrier and prevents termites from entering a structure.

  • How do I get rid of termites in my house?

The best way to get rid of termites is to apply termite killing products to a home or business’s exterior. That said, the highest rate of effectiveness with a guarantee is to call EcoGuard Pest Management to assist in services and exterminating your termite problem.

  • What is the average cost of termite control?

The average termite control depends on several factors like severity of infestation and size and type of treatment. That said, the numbers average between $1,500 and $5,000 in America. EcoGuard prices competitively and in addition to our guarantee, we will help develop an ongoing strategy to ensure that the initial cost is only paid once.
