Experienced Japanese Beetle Exterminators

Adult Japanese beetles are a threat to over 300 species of common plants and crops. Populations will grow quickly and both adult Japanese beetles and their grubs cause significant damage to different plants around your home. The adults will skeletonize leaves on trees, shrubs, and plants to the point of complete defoliation while grubs feed on the root systems of most grasses. This causes your plants and lawn to wither away and die from not being able to photosynthesize and deliver nutrition properly.

At EcoGuard Pest Management our maintenance program will ensure that your home and garden is Japanese beetle free all year long. We are experienced and knowledgeable in all forms of Japanese beetle treatment methods. Japanese Beetle Information

Japanese beetle facts

Japanese beetles are about ½ inch long and are easily identified with a metallic green head and golden wings with tufts of white hair underneath. Japanese beetles are an invasive species that are not found naturally in the United States. They were discovered on the east coast of the United States around 1920 and they have been moving west since. They are now common all over the US which has become an issue due to the damage they cause. Japanese beetles release pheromones to attract others which causes adults Japanese beetles to group up in large numbers. This can cause devastation to just about any household plant or crop surrounding your home. What makes these bugs even more problematic is that they will fly from plant to plant once all a plants’ leaves have been decimated.

In addition to that, Japanese beetles lay eggs in soil which develop into white grubs that feed on the root systems of most grasses. This can cause parts of your lawn to die without explanation. If your lawn pulls up like a carpet and all the roots are severed, there is a strong possibility that you have a white grub problem that needs to be addressed before they mature into Japanese beetles. Signs of Japanese beetle activity generally start in late May through early July which is when treatment should start. Check for signs of active beetles on warm days in areas that are in direct sunlight. Any signs of damaged or skeletonized leaves indicates that the Japanese beetle populations are starting to get out of control. They can become difficult to manage once their populations explode but it is important to maintain treatment methods until their numbers start to decrease when temperatures drop.

Thorough Inspection – It all starts with an inspection of your yard and garden to identify any Japanese beetle activity and how severe the infestation already is.

Insecticide Application – The combination of a pyrethrin insecticide and neem oil is the most effective treatment against Japanese beetles. Neem oil is a natural bug repellant that is most effective when applied before an infestation has started. Pyrethrin is a safe and effective insecticide treatment to use on lawns and gardens. Insecticide applications will be most effective if applied after Japanese beetles have started to feed on leaves.

Grub Prevention & Control – Introducing a combination of beneficial nematodes and growth regulators like Milky Spore will help eliminate grub populations which will reduce the number of mature Japanese beetles in the following year. Attacking the larval stage is most effective when done in late summer to early fall when grubs are strong enough to feed on grass roots.

Removal by Hand – Physically removing Japanese beetles and knocking them into a bucket of soapy water is an effective method of beetle control. Ensuring that they are dropped into soapy water will make sure the beetles drown which will help mitigate the possibility of another infestation.

Common Signs of Japanese Beetle

Japanese Beetle FAQs

  • What is a natural way to get rid of Japanese beetles?

Combining dish soap and water makes an effective natural Japanese beetle pesticide. This can be used to drown the beetles when manually removing them from plants or as a spray which can be directly applied to the beetles.

  • Will Japanese beetles ever go away?

The damages they cause are worst between mid-summer to late fall. The end of their short adult life cycle aligns with when temperatures drop, and weather starts to turn.

  • What is the natural enemy of the Japanese beetle?

Japanese beetles are targets for everything from birds, spiders, parasitic wasps, and other beneficial insects. That said, there isn’t a predator that is effective enough to keep Japanese beetle populations in check which is why they have been deemed an invasive species.

  • What spray kills Japanese beetles?

Any spray that contains pyrethrin or lambda cyhalothrin should be effective in killing Japanese beetles on contact.
