How To Get Rid Of Fruit Flies

Fruit fly extermination requires the removal of their breeding ground which could be as simple as cleaning the sink or emptying the trash. That said, if a fruit fly problem is persistent there may be an undiscovered breeding ground that should be treated by one of EcoGuard’s licensed fruit fly exterminators.

Prior to treatment, there are several fruit fly traps that can be used to control a small fruit fly problem.

  • Fill a container with apple cider vinegar and a few drops of dish soap as fruit fly bait. The soap causes fruit flies that land on the surface of the liquid to sink and drown.
  • Use the same method but with an open beer or bottle of wine. The smell will attract the fruit flies, the small opening will trap them, and the dish soap will cause the flies to sink and drown.

There are also prevention strategies that remove potential breeding areas before an area becomes infested.

  • Clean drains, sinks, and counter tops thoroughly with bleach to remove organic materials and eliminate odors.
  • Keep trash emptied and dishes clean.
  • Keep fresh produce in the fridge.
  • Repair any tears in window screens.

Fruit Fly Information

Fruit Fly Identification

Fruit flies are an extremely small species of fly that are typically between 3 – 4 mm in size. Even though details are too small to see, they generally have red or black eyes and a tax thorax. Even though they may be lighter in color, due to their size, they look dark brown.

Where do Fruit Flies Come From?

Fruit flies will enter a building through any small opening it can find to get to its next meal. This includes open doors and windows, doors with poor weather stripping, and tears in screen windows. Once inside they will find produce and lay eggs as the fruit or vegetable starts to rot. Each female fruit flies can lay up to 500 eggs at a time which results in a rapidly growing fruit fly infestation.

When are Fruit Flies Active?

Fruit flies are most active whenever there is fruit around that is slowly ripening or decomposing. This means that outdoor fruit flies are most prevalent during summer and fall harvest seasons while indoor fruit flies are most active when grocery shopping has just been completed and fruits have recently been introduced into a home.

Fruit Fly Life Cycle

Fruit flies breed quickly, and their size makes it hard to notice a problem until it’s already a big issue. Like most flies, fruit flies develop through 4 stages. They start as eggs and then hatch into larvae before developing into their pupal stage. After they pupate, an adult fruit fly will emerge. The development stages typically take just a few days while adult fruit flies can survive for up to a month. By the time they reach adulthood they are ready to reproduce and lay a new batch of up to 500 eggs on rotting fruit.
