Early detection is critical in the battle against fleas and a proactive approach is required to continue combatting fleas until they are eradicated. Otherwise these pests can get out of control and cause itchy flea bites on your pets and family. EcoGuard offers a full inspection so we can find these bugs where they are most and least likely to be found. We know what signs to look for and know what steps to take to maximize the effectiveness of our treatments.

Why Professional Flea Treatment is Necessary

The flea control experts at EcoGuard understand how important it is to ensure that your beloved pets are able to live without the nuisance pests causing them discomfort while also preventing them from being the host that introduces fleas into your home. While DIY efforts should assist in flea eradication, there is a serious risk of not treating a flea infestation completely or properly, which is why professional flea extermination is always recommended. It also doesn’t help that many flea products are often ineffective without the right implementation. EcoGuard’s flea exterminators know how to treat and where to treat for fleas to effectively terminate your flea problem. This is because we know how well fleas hide and how fast they reproduce, which is why it is so important to kill every flea and their eggs to prevent any further spread of these nasty pests. EcoGuard Pest Management offers:

  • Effective treatment strategies that terminate and prevent further flea activity
  • Safe and correct handling and implementation of flea treatments and pesticides
  • Expertise that reduces homeowners stress knowing that the job is done correctly
  • Time back as implementation is done as efficiently as possible

Flea Treatment, Preparation, & Prevention

Benefits of Vacuuming

The benefits of vacuuming cannot be overemphasized as a means of flea control. It is the first step in flea eradication and should be done in preparation of professional flea treatment. Vacuuming picks up all stages of fleas, directly reducing the population. It also removes dirt and spreads carpet fibers that can interfere with the penetration of pesticide applications (one reason why total release aerosol “flea bombs” are not very effective against fleas). In addition, physical pressure on the carpet from vacuuming can trigger the emergence of fleas from their pupal cocoons, exposing them to pesticide applications. After vacuuming and cleaning, pesticides labeled for flea control can be applied as spot treatments. It is important that any vacuum that has been used in preparation of flea treatment is disposed of carefully and taken outside as the fleas will still be alive and active and could potentially escape if not removed.

Laundry

Fleas are most likely to be found in bedding and linens. It is critical to wash all bedding, including the pet bedding, using hot water and high temperatures for drying. This elevates the temperature above the lethal temperature threshold that fleas can withstand. This is the best way to eliminate any fleas, larvae, and eggs that may be hiding in bedding.

Flea Pesticide Treatment

Understanding the flea life cycle is critical to the successful management of flea infestations. Control measures should focus on where the fleas are found and where they are suspected to be. Residual flea control products will be used in growth reduction strategies to help break the flea life cycle. The primary components are adulticides & growth regulators. Adulticides are designed to kill adult fleas on contact while the regulators affect developing fleas in larval stages. These applications should be applied to both interior and exterior harborage areas like upholstery, carpets, dog houses, etc.

Flea Heat Treatment

In addition to laundry, heat treatments can be used elsewhere to treat for fleas. To treat individual items like beds and furniture, a steamer can be used to penetrate even the deepest crevices with a blast of extreme heat. For more widespread flea infestations, whole room or house heat treatment can be applied. This method uses convection heaters to raise a space above a certain temperature.

Pet Care

When a home is being treated, it is important that the pet is treated at the same time to prevent the reintroduction of fleas into a cleaned environment. Pet owners should also regularly bath and groom their pets in addition to using safe chemical flea medications to ensure that pets are safely kept flea free. Using the medications is the best preventative measure to keep fleas out and regular bathing and grooming is the fastest way to identify when fleas are being introduced. If regular pet maintenance is not kept up, fleas can sneak in under the radar and become a problem. In addition to pet care, ensuring that ped bedding is regularly washed in hot water will kill off any fleas and their eggs.

Regular Inspections

Since complete flea extermination is difficult to achieve, it is important to have regular inspections after the initial treatment to ensure they have been removed completely. EcoGuard’s licensed and trained technicians will come back during regular services and check flea harborages to see if there are any signs of remaining fleas or their eggs.

Where to Treat for Fleas

Fleas can be found anywhere inside of a home but it is critical to treat where they are most likely to be found.

  • Bedding: Both human and pet bedding should be carefully inspected for signs of fleas and treated just in case. This requires vacuuming, steaming, laundering, and treatment to completely eradicate fleas around these areas.
  • Carpets, Rugs, & Upholstery: Fleas shed eggs all over the house which get deposited into carpets, rugs, and upholstery. It is critical to thoroughly vacuum all infested surfaces and apply treatment where needed.
  • Yard: Fleas are brought inside so treating areas with grass and leaves is another critical step in stopping a flea infestation. It also helps to keep a yard well maintained to reduce potential harborage points.

 What are Fleas?

Fleas are tiny, wingless pests that are reddish brown in color but most likely appear black to the naked eye. While they do not have wings, they are capable of jumping long distances equal to over 45x their body length which gives them the ability to jump and attach themselves to your pets or non-welcome rodents before being introduced to your home or business. Like other blood sucking pests like bed bugs and ticks, they depend on consistent blood meals, so they tend to attach themselves to a host in order to survive. Once they attach themselves to a host, their legs have long claws and spines that help prevent them from being brushed or scratched off.

While there are thousands of flea species, the most common ones found in the US are cat fleas, dog fleas, rat fleas, and human fleas. As their name implies, each species is attracted to a preferred host  with the cat flea being the most common species. Regardless of the species, all serious flea infestations will require a multi-faceted approach that requires treatment, cleaning, and preventative measures to ensure fleas are fully exterminated.

Flea Bites

The primary problem fleas are responsible for are flea bites, which cause skin irritations for both pets and humans. When you see pets scratching, this is often in response to flea bites. When fleas are disturbed, they may jump off their hosts and land in carpets, blinds, furniture, and bedding until they are able to find another host to feed on. In addition to causing itchy bites, fleas can spread disease and illnesses including bubonic plague.

Other Signs of Fleas

In addition to the emergence of flea bites, there are several other indicators that you may be dealing with a flea problem. Look for the following flea signs because fleas are small and are usually hard to detect without careful inspection.

  • Pets that excessively or violently scratch or bite at their skin
  • Dry, raw, or irritated skin on dogs and cats
  • Small red sores or scabs on pets
  • Flea feces that may appear on pets, bedding, or upholstery

Flea Reproduction

The other concerning fact about fleas is that females can lay more than 25 eggs a day which can lead to thousands of eggs in less than a week’s time. The eggs are generally laid while the pets are least active which result in their beds and resting areas being the source of many flea outbreaks. Once these eggs are laid, it is only a matter of time before the fleas reach adulthood causing an infestation to get out of control. Combatting this growth has proven extremely difficult for home and business owners which is why professional help is recommended when trying to get rid of fleas. If there are signs of flea activity or itchy bites, EcoGuard is here to help.

Flea FAQs

Cat and dog fleas also will infest certain types of wild carnivores, including opossums and raccoons, but not squirrels, rats or mice. Other flea species occasionally encountered by humans include the oriental rat flea (Xenopsylla cheopis) and the northern rat flea (Nosopsyllus fasciatus). These fleas live on Norway rats and roof rats, and are capable of transmitting plague and murine typhus to humans.
